Harissa Marinated Asparagus are an easy and flavorful Middle Eastern inspired salad or side. Middle eastern cooking does not need to be a mystery. My friend Helen, who surprisingly does not like to cook, loaned me a beautiful cookbook, “Persiana” Recipes from the Middle East and Beyond by Sabrina Ghayour. I discovered many fabulous recipes in this book that I intend to share with my readers soon. This simple recipe for Harissa Marinated Asparagus has only 5 ingredients in addition to the fresh asparagus. The key ingredient, harissa, can be found at many markets such as Whole Food and Trader Joe’s, it can be ordered online or you can make it yourself.
Harissa is a spicy and aromatic chili paste used in Libyan, Tunisian and other middle eastern cooking. The ingredients are simple and usually include roasted red peppers, hot peppers, garlic, caraway, coriander, cumin and oil. I used it in many of my recipes like my Moroccan Couscous.
Stocking your pantry with these spices will give you access to cuisines and cultures from around the world. Take a trip to the middle east one night with these easy to prepare asparagus. I prefer to grill the asparagus. They are also just as good if you pan sauté or broil them. You can serve them hot as a side or at room temperature in a salad. Make some magic!
