Vieux Carre, a Classic New Orleans Cocktail

vieux carre cocktail

Maybe because it’s Carnival time, or maybe it’s because I received the book “New Orleans Cocktails, ” by Sarah Baird for a Christmas gift, that my thoughts have recently drifted to my favorite classic New Orleans cocktails.  In homage to the New Orleans cocktail traditions and the Mardi Gras season, I decided to share one of my favorite classic cocktail recipes. There are so many to choose from.  Should I share my favorite recipe for a Sazerac, French 75, Pimm’s Cup, Ramos Gin Fizz or the Vieux Carre? Some consider the Vieux Carre, named after the French Quarter, to be a “manly drink,” because it is such a potent libation. I like it for sipping particularly when perched on a stool, where the said named cocktail was invented in the 1930’s,  at the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone in the heart of the French Quarter way down yonder in New Orleans! Happy Mardi Gras season and cheers!
